Objectives

The student should learn about:

(a) The two main causes of earthquakes; Tectonic and Volcanic activity;

(b) The meanings of focus, epicentre, P,S and L Waves, foreshocks and aftershocks;

(c) About the Elastic Rebound Theory;

(d) About the scales used to measure earthquake intensity ;

 

Outcomes

The student should have knowledge and understanding of:

(a) The origins of earthquakes;

(b) How shockwaves travel through the Earth;

(c) How earthquakes are measured;

(d) The terminology needed to talk about and describe an earthquake.
