Aims

To create a foundation knowledge of the Earth's structured composition as a basis for further work on Plate Tectonics, Continental Drift, Vulcanics and Earthquakes.

 

Objectives

The student should learn about:

(a) The age of the Earth;

(b) Why the Earth has a layered structure;

(c) The composition of the crust, mantle and core;

(d) Convection cells, and their movement.

 

Outcomes

The student should have knowledge and understanding of:

(a) The age and origin of the planet;

(b) The composition and characteristics of the crust, mantle and core;

(c) Key terms SIAL and SIMA;

(d) The process of convection.
